Only one elder brain controls an illithid colony because it works like how our brains control our body. Every mind flayer acts as an extention of the elder brain. It believes it is the most important thing in the realms, and if anything were to threaten its ego it would destroy it. BG3 of course made it more powerful and larger.

The only remaining quests in my playthrough are the final quest to confront the Elder Brain and Gale and Lae'zel's companion quests. I always keep Lae'zel by my side but should I also bring Gale to the final confrontation to see the ending of his quest or do you still see the same cutscenes etc with him? I normally don't really use him.Then, you can walk up to the Nether brain area and cast your spell to call forth a portal. Cast globe of invulnerability if you need as well. I was able to avoid taking any damage this way. I then walked through the portal, drank Potions of Speed, and killed the Elder Brain in 2 turns.In BG3, after defeating the Elder Brain, you can either control or eradicate it.
